Held Over, a thrift shop located in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, presents a generation of memories, each piece representing another life. Not only is the store full of aesthetics from another time, but it is also working towards sustainability today.

Store employee Leslie Dominguez said that Held Over’s oldest items date back to the 1940s.

“We sell and maintain clothes that would otherwise become waste,” she said.

Thrifting is more than a way of finding a new look. Recycling clothes is also environmentally friendly. Thrifting an old sweater helps reduce chemical pollution by not contributing to cotton production while also decreasing landfill waste by finding a new use for an old item.

Held Over pushes against what is known as fast fashion, when big companies mass-produce clothes cheaply to encourage consumers to buy more clothes more frequently. This trend contributes to the fashion industry being the second biggest polluter in the modern world.

“Fashion industries or just big corporations have a grasp on trends so they manufacture things really fast and keep the trend available and more financially accessible because it’s cheaper than handmade items,” Dominguez said.
