Haight Street Market, named for its location along its namesake in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, is a shop that sells products that are all locally sourced.

Manager Robert Barber said the store takes extra time to make sure products are appropriately ordered. They also make sure to prevent the ordering of excess products to ensure that little will be disposed of.

Shopping from a local market such as Haight Street can reduce food miles, the amount of miles it takes for food to get from where its grown to where you purchase it. This reduces the environmental impact it takes to get your food to your fridge.

Barber said that while you can try to be sustainable, challenges still arise, even when transporting food.

“Imagine that pallet accidentally fell off the truck,” he said. “Can you imagine how much labor is involved just from separating the peanut butter from the broken glass to do the right thing, recycle the glass, give away and package the peanut butter.”

But above all, Haight Street Market makes the effort.

“Like a parent would say,” Barber said, “we are all trying our best.”
